The Minds That Watch Us

2021 / Experimental

Description

A silent, experimental film exposing, analyzing, and responding to the male gaze.

Note

My first experiment with 16mm black-and-white film, this was primarily an exercise in lighting for 16mm B&W film, but I used the opportunity to investigate the male gaze by framing and lighting in a way that created an intrusive atmosphere before revealing that what was hidden by frame and shadow was much less explicit than I’d led the viewer to believe, essentially interrogating both the camera’s gaze and the viewer’s assumptive gaze. It was an interesting experiment in silent filmmaking that certainly served as good practice for purely visual storytelling, using light and shadow as key storytelling devices.
